BASIC FUNCTION:
Under supervision of the site administrator and general direction of the babysitter coordinator, maintain safety and supervise the play activities of children (ages 1 to 5 years old) while their parents participate in the ESL Family Literacy Classes offered by Oakland Adult and Career Education. Parents will remain on-site at all times and are primarily responsible for their children.
This position is temporary and on an "as-needed" basis. Babysitters (Temporary-Staff) will perform duties at a variety of different locations within Oakland Unified School District. Because the need for childcare will fluctuate with parents' enrollment in Adult Career and Education Courses, this position will have an irregular schedule.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

- Supervises play areas, engages children in safe and educationally enriching activities during class hours.
- Remains alert and reports conditions hazardous to the health and safety of children.
- Maintains a supportive attitude and good communication with children and parents.
- Maintains parent registration, parent sign-in/sign-out records.
- Informs parents about babysitting rules.
- Assures children's safety during class hours.
- Maintains a clean, safe babysitting area.
- Maintains communication with site teacher and parents regarding childcare issues.
- Communicates any childcare-related issues with Family Literacy administration and/or site teacher as necessary.
- Maintains on-site childcare-related supplies and reorder as necessary.
- Facilitates appropriate emergency procedures as needed; maintains order in emergencies.
- Attends monthly babysitters' training meeting as available.
- Arrives on-time and remains on the shift.
- Completes and submits bi-monthly time sheets.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: TRAINING, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE
- Some previous experience in babysitting groups of children, ages 1-5 yrs.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English sufficient to perform the roles and responsibilities, including:
- Orally communicate with Adult Education office staff, the site teacher and parents
- Complete payroll forms
- Ensure child registration, sign-in/sign-out by parents
- Read assignment letter and work schedule
- Good judgment
- Flexibility in work hours and work locations
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
- Basic knowledge of appropriate play activities.
- Basic first aid and emergency procedures
- Employment eligibility that may include fingerprints and tuberculosis clearance
